Railways systems
- Alpitel activities in the railways sector began in year 2000
with the installation of optical and copper cables along the
railways lines of the Liguria and Veneto regions.
The contract on the GENOVA – PISA line required the layout of small surface tunnels and the setup of all the infrastructures needed to host different types of cables, both in open air and in tunnels.
In the rail line between Genova and La Spezia (90 km) cables with 16 optical fibers were installed for the operator RFI operator and cables with 72 optical fibers were installed for the Infostrada operator. In addition, cables with 46 symmetrical pairs for telecommunications and diverse IS cables for sound diffusion were also installed.
In the rail line between La Spezia and Pisa (80Km) cables with 46 and 22 symmetrical pairs were installed, as a well as a 16 FO cable.
Between Savona and Genova (40 Km) cables with 16 optical fibers were installed for the RFI operator and cables with 46 and 22 symmetrical pairs for telecommunications and IS cables for sound diffusion were also installed.
In the Veneto region, Alpitel worked on the railway line Venice S.L. – Castelfranco – Padova, Vicenza – Castelfranco – Treviso and Casarsa – Portogruaro on a total of 300 Km of line. As for the other railways line, Alpitel setup the infrastructure and laid out different types of cables for signaling, telecommunications and sound diffusion.
The location and the high frequency of trains along the Liguria’s railways lines created some operational challenges which allowed Alpitel to develop a comprehensive experience in execution of works during the brief times when the trains were not running as well as operating in narrow spaces and in tunnels.
This experience was instrumental for Alpitel to gain a contract in 2003 for the layout of 1,100 km of optical fibers cables on the railways line of the entire national territory. The contract was won and carried out in temporary business association with a reputable supplier – Nexans Italia.
During the years 2004 and 2005 aerial optical cables were installed on the poles of the railways electric lines and optical cables (24 and 32 fibers) contained in metallic sheath laid out on the ground.
The railways lines cabled are:
Torino – Modane, Roma – Caserta, Battipaglia – Metaponto, Catania – Siracusa, Sibari – Reggio Calabria, Savona – Imperia, Milano – Domodossola, Parma – Chiesaccia, Fornovo – Fidenza, Roma – Pescara, Bari – Lecce, Alessandria – Piacenza, Paola – Tarsia. At the end of the project a total of 1,600 km of railway lines were covered.
The optical fibers links the main railways stations and will be used by RFI operator for the interconnection of all existing communication systems and those being implemented, such as telephone exchanges, GSMR systems for the radio coverage of railway lines and tunnels, and all new communication systems that are being implemented on high speed lines and that will become standard on all railway lines in the future.
Alpitel is determined to partner with the RFI operator in the development and installation of all systems that are being implemented in the country, from telecommunications- our core skill – to security and control systems. We have gained experience executing security and control systems and we are now ready for these systems planning and development.
Another project in implementation phase is the interconnection of the telephone exchanges of the Turin’s railway department with transmission systems SHDSL on copper and/or optical fiber cables. This system will allow RFI to have a homogeneous telephone network. This new network, built with Selta’s arrays, will be complemented with the installation of a central monitoring and control system located in Turin, where it will be possible to monitor and reconfigure the various links.
Alpitel, in Temporary Business Association with Sirti, Ceit and Icot is working on the radio coverage of railways’ tunnels for the implementation of GSMR services (Railway) and the extension of the GSM coverage of TIM and VODAFONE on Southern Italy railway lines. Alpitel is operating on the entire department of the city of Bari and on the Sicilian line Messina – Catania – Siracusa.
These systems consist of a head station at the beginning of the tunnel. The head station is positioned on a shelter with antennas and on a pole. The antennas receive the signals of the various operators. The signal is then amplified and sent through the tunnel through a radiating cable laid out on the tunnel walls. This system allows the train driver and its staff to communicate with the staff in the stations and in the traffic control centers, thorugh a dedicated and secure radio link such as GSMR. The system also allows passengers to use their mobile phones regardless of their network operator.
